“So much of law school is theoretical. The opportunity to apply the knowledge we learned in Phil’s Crimmigration class to an actual case was invaluable — and easier said than done.”

The Crimmigration Clinic, directed by Philip Torrey, is one of the first law school clinics in the country to focus exclusively on legal issues at the intersection of criminal law and immigration law. The Clinic seeks to educate students and advance immigrants’ rights through litigation, policy advocacy, and direct representation on issues ranging from mandatory detention and crime-based deportation to immigration federalism and constitutional protections in pre-conviction criminal proceedings.
The Clinic offers students an opportunity to work primarily on litigation-related skills, including legal research, writing, and oral advocacy as well as policy research. Past and current projects include direct appeals and amicus support before the Board of Immigration Appeals, U.S. Courts of Appeals, and the Supreme Court, as well as trial-level habeas litigation before federal district courts. Students in the Clinic work closely with clinical instructors with years of both practice and teaching experience.
